Bathroom Hacks for Hosting During the Holidays
As plumbers, we see a LOT of bathrooms. While our focus is usually on the toilet leak, on the pipes under the sink, or on your clogged bathtub drain, we do notice the more attractive parts of the bathrooms we visit. Guest bathrooms are particularly intriguing, as they are often shared by other members of the household and aren't solely designated for guests. Combine that with the fact that they're often smaller than your master bath, and it can get a little crowded when you host during the holidays. We've picked up a few helpful ideas in our years of working that might make hosting easier for you!
So, here are our top 3 small bathroom hacks for hosts!
1. Make the most of EVERY inch.
A small bathroom usually has limited storage, including storage for wet towels. Adding an over-the-door towel rack is a great way to give your guests a place to let their towel dry, without having to permanently add extra hooks to your wall. When the guests go home, you can just take the rack down and store it in a closet until the next time it's needed. When it comes to storage under your sink, think up instead of out. By purchasing inexpensive stacking units that fit into cabinets, you can store extra washcloths, toiletry items, toilet paper, and more in an organized way.
2. Take the bathroom to the bedroom.
If your small secondary bathroom is going to be shared between overnight guests and your own family, it's important to make sure you have a place for your guests to get ready without feeling pressured by other members of the household. If you have a guest bedroom, or if you're hosting friends or family overnight in an office space or playroom, have a "bathroom in a box" to place in their area before they arrive. This box, basket, or tote can hold things like facial wipes, new toothbrushes, travel size toiletries, and even a bottle of water or two. Make sure to hang a mirror in their sleeping space as well, or provide a tabletop option for doing hair, makeup, etc., preferably near an outlet for use of hair dryers or other heat tools. Basically, give them a space to take care of tasks without taking up extra time in the bathroom.
3. Prevent awkward encounters.
We've all been there. You're at someone's home, and the toilet clogs at the most inconvenient time, or you end up needing to take care of some clean up you weren't expecting. As a host, make your guests comfortable and prevent awkward encounters by keeping a plunger, some cleaning wipes/solution, and a roll of paper towels under the bathroom cabinet. This makes sure your guest can take care of their issue in private, without needing to bring your attention to the matter. You'll both appreciate that!
